Technical Requirements for Online ClassesComputer: You need access to a computer capable of running current software and web browsers. Anything that was new in the past three years should be fine. As a general guideline, your computer must be running Windows ME,2000,or XP, or Mac OSX. Some instructors send supplementary materials to their students on CD-ROM. Be sure to check with your instructor for additional hardware and software requirements, if any, specific to your course. Internet Access: You must have some type of Internet access either through an ISP such as Verizon, AOL or Earthlink or at work. If you rely on your employer's Internet connection, be aware that firewall restrictions may exist that prevent you from accessing all or part of your course, using our online tools. Web Browser: We require either Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater or Firefox 1.0 or later. ATTENTION AOL USERS: you cannot use the AOL web browser to access your online courses. If you do so, you will not have the functionality required to participate in your course. Use AOL to connect to the Internet, but then open a different web browser - Internet Explorer, for example, to access your online course. Additional Software or Plug-ins: Depending on your course and instructor, you may have to purchase software. (e.g., the SPSS statistics package for a statistics course). Also, many instructors post lecture materials online in various file formats (typically PowerPoint, Word or PDF files). To open these files, you will need the appropriate software or software viewer plug-in. We recommend purchasing Microsoft Office 2000 or higher, available through most software retailers at an academic rate of ~$200. However, you can also download the free MS Word and PowerPoint viewers from Microsoft at the following links: Free MS Word viewer Free MS PowerPoint viewer There is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office called Open Office. This software suite contains alternatives to Word, Excel and PowerPoint and can open Microsoft files. We provide this information to you as an alternative; however, we have not tested all Word, Excel and PowerPoint files to guarantee they will function properly. Also recommended is the free Adobe Acrobat PDF viewer. Again, be sure to check with your instructor for additional hardware and software requirements, if any, specific to your course. Getting assistance and support: There are various ways to seek assistance through the Learning Resource Center and Office of Information Technology: Via telephone: (617) 724-7910: Staff is available during the Institute's regular hours of operation. Via email: ihphelp@mghihp.edu. We will respond as quickly as possible when staff is in the office as per the Institute's Regular Hours of Operation. Note that we will support issues related to using our online learning courses only. If your computer or internet connection is malfunctioning, please contact the appropriate support resource through your vendor. |
