October 2008: Two Alums Co-Author Paper

Alums Susan Smith CSD '93 and Allan Smith CSD '96 recently were co-authors of a paper entitled "A Longitudinal Study of Speech Timing in Young Children Later Found to Have Reading Disability" in the October 2008 edition of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

October 2008: Alum Kelly Gardner CSD '05 Publishes Research

Kelly Gardner CSD '05 recently was a co-author of a paper entitled "Antipsychotics and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Hospitalized Older Patients" in the October 2008 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.

Alexis works with kindergarten through fifth grade children from both regular and special education classrooms. He specializes in articulation and language therapy in both large classroom and small group settings. While an undergraduate psychology major Alexis worked part-time at a pre-school, which inspired him to pursue a master's in speech-language pathology.

A graduate from the Institute's first class of speech-language pathologists, Susan Smith specializes in phonology and phonological disorders, lanuage development, early childhood disorders, as well as literacy and reading disabilities. She earned her doctorate in developmental psychology and regularly presents, both nationally and internationally, regarding her research in dyslexia and other areas of interest. Husband Allan Smith's clinical work is primarily with children and adolescents and his research focuses on acoustic measurement of speech in children with communication disorders.

Fulbright Scholar, 1998

After graduating from the Institute, Yampolsky was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study speech recongnition technology, specifically how computers recognize speech difficulty caused by neurological damage, such as stroke or brain injury. She is currently with the Massachusetts General Hospital. She is also currently serving on the alumni board of directors at MGH Institute.
