These directions guide visitors to the Catherine Filene Shouse Building, 36 1st Avenue, and to the main parking garage in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Please note that due to the street numbering used inside the navy yard area, Mapquest and other online map services often show "36 First Avenue" as being 1 - 2 blocks away from its actual location.

Turn right onto Chelsea Street and make an immediate left onto 5th Street. Go one block (5th Street dead-ends) and turn left onto 1st Avenue.

Limited metered parking is available along 1st Avenue. To get to the parking garage from the Shouse Building, follow the posted blue "Parking" street signs and continue along 1st Avenue to 13th Street and turn left. Go two short blocks and turn right onto 5th Avenue to parking garage entrance.

The parking garage operates 24 hours a day. The daily public parking rate is $3 for the first hour and $1 for each additional half-hour. After six hours, the all-day rate of $14 is charged. (Once enrolled in the MGH Institute, parking for students and employees is free on weeknights from 5pm to 9am. You must visit the parking garage office to have your ID badge programmed. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.)

Walking from the Parking Garage

Exit the parking garage onto 13th Street. Turn left and walk two short blocks (toward the water) to 1st Avenue. Turn right and walk two blocks down 1st Avenue to the Shouse Building.

Alternate Approaches

By Subway (Green, Orange lines)

Take the commuter rail or either the Green or Orange line to North Station. From there, take Partners Shuttle (see below). Visit the official MBTA website for detailed transit information, or try the independent site, HopStop.com.

By Partners Shuttle (daily, except holidays)

Take any Partners shuttle displaying an "MGH/CNY" placard, which departs Massachusetts General Hospital every fifteen minutes on the quarter hour, beginning at 5:30am Monday to Friday (every half hour on weekends beginning at 9:00am) from the shuttle stop located between the Jackson Building doors and the Blossom Street loading dock (after 6pm, it moves to Gray Building doors).

From MGH the shuttle stops at North Station – at the intersection of Canal and Causeway Streets – on its way to the Navy Yard. Take the second shuttle stop after North Station, which is the intersection of Chelsea Street and 5th Street ("Gate 4"). From 5th Street, walk one block to the stop sign and turn left onto 1st Avenue. The Partners shuttle is free to all riders.

By Inner Harbor Ferry (from Long Wharf)

The Navy Yard can be reached from Long Wharf, (Aquarium stop on the Blue line). Long Wharf is within walking distance of South Station (Red line) and State Street (Orange, Blue lines).

The ferry drops passengers off at the end of Terry Ring Way. Walk up Terry Ring Way toward 1st Avenue, past the public park and Korean War Veterans Memorial. The Shouse Building will be on the right, adjacent to the park. The Long Wharf ferry operates Monday through Friday, with more limited weekend service.
